Welcome to the first episode of "Banking on Success," hosted by Elitza Kavrakova and Daniel Rath from Raiffeisen Bank International. In this episode, they sit down with Franz Hörhager, founder of Accession Capital Partners (ACP), to discuss his career journey and insights into the financial markets of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

Hörhager shares his fascinating career trajectory, starting from his early days in Vienna, working as a driver, to becoming a key figure in the banking sector with a focus on Eastern Europe. He recounts his experiences in the Soviet Union during the late 70s and early 80s, highlighting how this period shaped his understanding of different economic systems.

Hörhager transitioned from commercial banking to private equity and mezzanine financing, founding ACP in 2000. He emphasizes the importance of having a mentor and the role of geopolitical changes in shaping his career. ACP focuses on providing mezzanine financing to SMEs in CEE, filling a gap between senior loans and equity.

The conversation also touches on the economic and cultural differences within CEE countries. Hörhager notes the optimism and work ethic prevalent in the region, which he attributes to the hardships faced during the communist era. He discusses the challenges and opportunities in CEE, including the importance of EU membership and the adoption of the euro.

Hörhager highlights the significance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors in investment decisions, sharing ACP's proactive approach to sustainability. He believes that integrating ESG principles not only benefits society but also enhances the long-term value of investments.

The episode concludes with Hörhager offering career advice to young professionals, emphasizing the importance of hard work and finding passion in one's job. He encourages looking at CEE as a region of opportunity rather than risk, given its dynamic economic landscape and potential for growth.
